Chapter 1

Orawi nin Diwit

1
Misteryosong orawit
Pigsasambit ning diwit
Papakniton an riknom
Ning sînag san bitoon

(These mystifying verses
From the lips of a hopper
Will tear away the darkness
With the sparkle of stars)

2
Matoninong su tawo
Katungdan n’ya pighampang
Nyanga daw uminaso
Su matarom na sundang

(He was at peace with himself
Took to his task with fervor
How come the blade smoldered
How come he lost his candor)

3
Su gira nu gitara
Pigsusog ta ning kanta
Su hadok nu sampaga
Pigsaray ta sa plawta

(We retrace with melodies
The foottracks of glad guitars
We treasure in fervent flutes
The kiss of jasmine flowers)

4
Mataromon an sugyang
Pag langtad na an dagá
Ararumon an tudok
Pag an tungtong mo salá

(When field and sod turn fallow
Sharper the grass spikes grow
These thorns cut deepest your sole
Each time you err like a fool)

5
Hindi mo paghulaton
An ragabrab san alpog
Tulos mo nang pukawon
An kahulay ning turog

(Go now, wait not for the sun
To blast off with blazing dust
Wake him up without delay
He who lingers long in bed)

6
Nadismayo nanggayud
Su babaying matubís
Nu kaptan siya sa kamut
Satung tawong may tisis

(An antiseptic lady
Fell in a faint sad to say
When a fellow with TB
Held her hand unwittingly)

7
Narakdag su pigmawot
Sa gayad kan bulod
Nasabit su pangadyi
Sa hagianan nu padi

(Oh how sad it is indeed
When simple dreams go to naught
When entreaties get snagged
At the staircase of the priest)

8
Mag-ingat sa paglabto
Sa istorya ning tawo
Sa salog na hababaw
An tubig makarapsaw

(Beware of wading into
The private tales of people
True the water is shallow
In brooks that gush and prattle)

9
Nyanga daw ta an lanyóg
Paros na an kabarog
Pirmi na sanang tangád
Halangkaw an tingkalág

(Why is it that the haughty
Befriends no one but the gale
Craves for the wings of the wind
And desires to touch the skies)

10
Kin sa muslak ning ngimot
Natitigbak an boót
Sa sobrang pakilabot
Pati tûlang mo ronót

(If the venom of cuss words
Can slay one’s sense of worth
Much too much sly intrusion
Can crush your bones for certain)

11
Nu napaknit su balúd
Sa gagaidan nu langit
Naglamutaw su kahoy
Nagriligid su làgit

(When the sea swelled and got ripped
From the hemline of the skies
The trees frolicked in the surf
The granites dove from the cliffs)

12
Kin maribók an mundó
An boses wara tanto
Maray sana su bungóg
Ta wara nadudungog

(If the world is so shrill
Our voice losses its merit
All the gain goes to the deaf
For he hears none of it)

13
Bukon sana gitara
An kaya tang kibliton
Bukon sana kadena
An kaya tang lugtoson

(Would that truth be plainly said
We pull triggers not just lutes
More than mere iron shackles
We rip apart to break free)

14
Pagtubod sana matúd
An pirming makusogon
Halangkaw man na bulód
Kayang-kayang tukadon

(Faith is all we need in fact
Forever true and vibrant
No matter how high the peak
We scale it barring none)
